Giselle Cárcamo -- a member of Mujeres of the Northwest and an organizer with the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center -- is an active and hardworking advocate for our community.
Throughout the past 2 years as Justice for Women Coordinator, Giselle has discovered that community organizing is about re-defining spaces for dialogue and interaction; appreciating people's contextual situation; honoring collective power; but most importantly it is about trusting the human potential to discover what it cares about and re-create reality. Giselle is very grateful to have had the opportunity to join an organization that has enriched her ability to speak truth to power and that has helped her to realize that social change is possible and it can actually happen!
Through her work as Justice for Women Coordinator, Giselle hopes to continue to build a stronger and more inclusive community, to amplify the voice of underprivileged women, and to fortify their organizing capacity.
She is currently organizing Justice for Women: Latinas Connected for Change! (Justicia para la Mujer: ¡Latinas Conectadas para el Cambio!), a conference in Spanish for Latinas on Saturday November, 5th at Seattle Center’s Exhibition Hall.
The conference, organized by the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center, is co-sponsored by the City of Seattle, the Seattle Center, the Children’s Museum, Community Health Plan of Washington, Plaza Bank, Susan G. Komen, and Mujeres of the NW!!
The goals of the conference (conducted entirely in Spanish) are to:
- Build skills for leadership development, civic participation, and community building;
- Develop an expanded Latina network to address the needs of Western WA’s growing Latino population;
- Identify and address the challenges that the Latino community faces; and
- Foster city-wide collaborative opportunities that will better serve the Latino community.
Please support Giselle and her amazing work. We are so proud!
